A steamy affair on the Fond de Gras

Not leaving Luxembourg this summer? Why not get out and explore the Fond de Gras steam train and LaSauvage mines.

Get your holidays on track with a trip on Luxembourg's only steam railway line, head underground to explore the eerie mines or take a stroll across the magnificent Terres Rouges.

The south of Luxembourg was once a site of intense industry as miners from across Europe risked their lives far underground to remove precious iron ore. Entire towns and businesses grew up around this industry and, though mining activities have long-since died out, the immense machines, fascinating stories and cavernous tunnels remain a popular attraction.

In Fond-de-Gras visitors can explore the faithfully restored Epicerie Binck and be awed by the enormous power station relocated from Hollerich. A short train ride to Lasauvage offers yet more treasures with an atmospheric tour 4 kilometres underground into the mines and the museum Eugène Pesch and Espace Muséologique, offering an unparalleled insight into a vibrant mining community.
