Luxembourg school kids have a good nose for fundraising

There was plenty of fun and games in the English section of The European School Lux I and Lux II on Friday. However, the reason for the festivities was no laughing matter.

For the second year in a row, the teachers in the Anglophone section were raising money to support Red Nose Day, an initiative created 25 years ago by Comic Relief, a British charity organisation that helps those who are less privileged in the UK and Africa.

Throughout the week, the students have been learning about the kinds of difficulties many of the less fortunate are confronting on a daily basis, in the meantime becoming aware of “how privileged they are,” as Mrs Alison Yun, a year 4 teacher and one of the event organisers stated. “It opens [the children’s] eyes.”

To help address these issues, the English teachers initiated a loose change collection. Also, the children were encouraged to buy a red nose for 2 euro and bring pastries and pocket money for a cake sale on Friday.

Further activities included a silent art session and an athletic obstacle course. The idea behind these activities was for the students to raise further funds by having family and friends sponsor them.

When asked how effective it is to use comedy to help those in need, Mrs Yun replied, “The kids help others, and they have fun and feel good about doing it.” Such a win-win situation is nothing to laugh at.

Last year, 1,250 euro was raised. This year’s amount looks to eclipse that sum.

Some ways that Comic Relief puts the collected money to use is through the purchasing of malaria testing kits, mosquito nets and art-therapy materials for bereaved children.
